How to Change Your Name on Yelp, or Add a Nickname

How do I change my name on Yelp?

Yelp is a popular online review and social networking service that allows people to share their experiences with local businesses, as well as rate them.

Yelp accounts are convenient for businesses and individuals alike, but most of us don’t think about the fact that it’s much more than a database of reviews. Your Yelp profile is actually a social network that allows you to connect with other people who have similar interests, and in many cases, can even help you get an edge on your local competition.

That said, there may be times when you don’t want others to know something about you—maybe it’s time for a new job and you don’t want to be associated with your current business on Yelp, or maybe you just had a bad experience with someone who could negatively impact your reputation if they post honest reviews about their experience with you.

Whatever the reason, this article will help walk you through changing your name on Yelp so that others won’t see it appears under your Yelp profile.

Keep in mind though that Yelp itself recommends using your real name and not a pseudonym on the site.

Here’s how you can update your Yelp profile name:

  1. Head to the and log into your account.

  2. Click on your profile picture on the top-right corner of the screen.

  3. From the dropdown menu, click on “Account Settings.”

  4. Go to the “Profile” section and under your profile picture, fill in the new name that you want to use.

  5. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and confirm the changes by hitting “Save.”

Can you change a Yelp business name?

When you sign up for a Yelp Business account, you are required to enter your business name, which is used as the title of your profile page, and is often included in the business reviews you receive.

If you’re a business owner or you’ve had a name change, you can update your business’s information on Yelp. Business owners may want to change their business name on Yelp if they’ve updated it for branding purposes, purchased another business, or even expanded their services.

Here are the steps to update your business name on your business page of Yelp. There are two different ways you can do it.

First, through the website:

  1. Log into your Yelp for Business account.

  2. Navigate to the “Account Settings” section.

  3. Next to Business Information, click “Edit.”

  4. Update your business name.

  5. Click “Save.”

You can also do the same through the Yelp for Business app.

  1. On the Apple iPhone, tap More. In Android (where you download the app through Google Play), you can open the Sidebar Menu.

  2. Click on “Account Information.”

  3. Click on the name field and update your business name.

  4. Tap Save.

How do I add a nickname to my Yelp account?

The reason why you would want to add a nickname to your Yelp account is so that people can recognize you’ve reviewed their business.

One of the key concepts of online communities is that they’re often composed of people who go online to find information they use in daily life, such as where to get the best quality food or services. Yelp helps people accomplish this by offering a platform for users to rate businesses and post reviews.

But what if you’re tired of being known only as that “friendly business owner on Yelp,” and want to be recognized as something else?

You can change your nickname by following these steps:

  1. Head to the and log into your account.

  2. Click on your profile picture on the top-right corner of the screen.

  3. From the dropdown menu, click on “Account Settings.”

  4. Under “Account Settings,” look for the “Nickname” box under your profile picture.

  5. Enter the nickname you would like to use.

  6. Click “Save.”

Your nickname will now be shown between your first and last name on your Yelp page.

How do you remove your name from Yelp?

Some individuals may desire a break from the community and decide to remove their name from Yelp to no longer be associated with it.

Yelp does prefer users to keep their first and last name on their account. However, Yelp currrently doesn’t provide any guidelines on how one can keep their Yelp page active while taking out just their name details. For this, we recommend contacting Yelp customer service and ask them for guidance.

As an alternative, you can also change your name to a pseudonym by editing your personal information under “Account Settings.”

Can you use a fake name on Yelp?

It’s not uncommon for people to want to use a fake name on Yelp. There are valid reasons for wanting to be anonymous on Yelp, whether to protect your reviews from your spouse or workplace, or fear of being flagged for biased reviews.

After all, everyone has a right to their own opinions and shouldn’t be afraid of expressing them. But does this mean that using a pseudonym is allowed on Yelp?

To start, Yelp prefers that people use their real names since they feel it encourages people to be as honest as possible with their reviews which comes directly out of their content guidelines. This is because they believe it’s more likely that a person will take the time to write a thoughtful review if they’re putting their real name behind it.

It also makes it easier for business owners and service providers to follow up with a Yelper if they feel they’ve been reviewed unfairly.

Keep in mind though that if you wish to join the Yelp Elite Squad, a yearly program and community dedicated to active Yelpers, you must have your real name on your profile.

Why does Yelp have my old name?

Sometimes, the Yelp platform may have a lag or error in updating your profile name. Or perhaps your profile name is linked to your social media accounts like Facebook so it isn’t updated directly on the Yelp API.

This can also happen if you are setting up a new business profile or updating your business name and other business info like the phone number. Maybe the updated information isn’t showing.

In this case, the best thing you can do is directly try changing the name on Yelp using the previous aforementioned steps. However, if that still doesn’t work or you don’t see the new name being reflected, reach out to Yelp Support for help.
